United Nations : US is not in a position to act against wishes of its tax-payers, said Foreign Minister of Iran Manouchehr Mottaki on Wednesday prior to leaving here for Tehran.

Mottaki made the remarks during a press conference held at the end of his two-week visit to New York where he attended the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly and conferred with his
counterparts from many other countries at the margins of the UN annual meeting.

“It is clear that they (US officials) are looking for other objectives instead of pursuing a constructive way to solve the problem. Iran’s nuclear issue has not been their main objective,” Mottaki argued.

As for mounting pressures on Iran for its peaceful nuclear activities, Mottaki said that the activities were supported by members of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) member states and 118 world countries.

However, he added, the reason behind increasing pressures on Iran by certain countries was that they were trying to solve problems they have faced, “particularly in our region.”
Those countries have adopted an “unjust” way to achieve their goals, Mottaki regretted.

“As we have understood from the very beginning, there are two options: One is to cooperate and the other is to confront. We prefer the first option and believe that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is a proper place to solve the problem (Iran’s nuclear issue),” Mottaki said.

He stressed that Iran’s nuclear activities were legal, for civilian and peaceful purposes and based on the (IAEA’s) regulations.

“When there is no violation of international regulations, there should be no problem,” Mottaki stressed.
