Ranchi : The Jharkhand government has extended the memorandums of understanding (MoUs) of Tata Steel and Arcelor Mittal by three years to enable the companies to set up steel plants in the state.
Both the companies had signed the MoUs in September 2005 and agreed to start work within two years. However, they are yet to do so.
A committee headed by chief secretary P.P. Sharma Wednesday approved the extensions.
Mittal signed a MoU to set up a 12 million tonne steel plant and Tata Steel had signed a MoU to set up a Rs.10 million tonne steel plant.
Official sources said both companies have assured the state government to start work on the projects once they acquire land.
