New Delhi : Over 740 doctors and nurses of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will be awarded degrees Tuesday, nearly 30 months after they completed their courses.
“The 35th Convocation will be held on Oct 23 at the AIIMS. As many as 749 degrees shall be awarded,” said AIIMS spokesman Shakti Gupta.
Of the 749 degrees, 63 are Ph.D. degrees, 186 MD (Doctorate in Medicine) degrees, and 103 are MBBS degrees. Also, 127 nursing graduates will receive their degrees.
These doctors and nurses had to wait for degrees as Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss had not signed the certificates.
While medicos blame Ramadoss, who is also the president of the institute, the minister blames AIIMS administration for the delay.
“According to the AIIMS act, degrees are awarded on the convocation day but the AIIMS administration has not held convocation for last two years,” Ramadoss had told IANS.
While Ramadoss will preside over Tuesday’s function, Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia will be the chief guest.
The AIIMS is the top government-run medical college of the country and over 8,000 patients per day are treated at the hospital affiliated to it.
