United Nations : Kuwait late Friday said the reform process of the United Nations should be an ongoing process meant to create a more powerful and effective organization that can perform its duties and achieve the desired goals.
Addressing the General Assembly’s budgetary and financial committee as it examined the proposed programme budget for the Biennium 2008-2009 which amounts to USD 4.2 billion and contains a growth of USD 23 million over the previous period, Kuwaiti representative Abdullah Al-Fadhli said his delegation would follow the extensive deliberations underway regarding the issue and “it is our hope that the committee can reach a consensus satisfactory to all parties.”
He said it was imperative to strengthen the principles of transparency and oversight over the various projects and activities of the United Nations and to also uphold the principle of equitable geographical distribution on the basis of qualification concerning the posts recently created.
He reaffirmed the importance of the General Assembly and the other relevant organs’ role within the United Nations system commissioned in areas that include planning, programming, preparing budgets, monitoring and evaluating.
On the United Nations Capital Master Plan by which the UN headquarters will be renovated, he said his delegation would follow closely the relevant reports and stressed the need in this regard to accelerate the renovations and start implementing the strategy without any delays, warning that delays entailed imposing additional costs to the budget.
