Brussels : The European Union (EU) has strongly condemned the murder of Alisher Saipov, a Kyrgyz journalist and Human Rights defender of Uzbek origin, in Kyrgyzstan, on October 24.
“The EU deplores Mr Saipov’s death and praises his work, which has provided an important contribution to the promotion of human rights,” said an EU Presidency statement late Wednesday.
The EU urged the Kyrgyz authorities to hold an immediate and thorough investigation into the death of Saipov and arrest the perpetrators of this act and bring them to justice.
Saipov, an ethnic Uzbek with Kyrgyz citizenship, wrote about human rights violations in Uzbekistan.
