Tehran : Iran confirmed Monday it received a new US request to renew talks on security in Iraq, which it is assessing.
In his weekly media meeting, Mohammad Ali Hosseini, spokesman of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, stated his country will give a response in due course. This request does not come from the Iraqi government.
The fourth round of conversations should have been held on March 6, but the meeting was cancelled at the last minute.
According to the Iranian agency IRNA, Teheran values talks with United States on the Iraqi security, because it is interested in the stability of neighboring countries.
Both parties have already met three times: May 28, July 24 and August 24, 2007.
Hosseini had said Saturday that Teheran would ignore all US requests to talk on Iraq and assured that his country’s authorities would only analyze requests made directly by Baghdad.
He noted that to renew exchanges on the Iraq issue with Washington, the latter must adopt a group of measures and review its policy with Iran, with whom it has had no diplomatic relations for 29 years.
Sources close to negotiations stated that the commission was approved to support the Iraqi stabilization.
