Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh) : An engineering student attacked a girl, his junior in the college, with a knife and seriously injured her at her home Wednesday in Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayawada city, the police said.
Meena Kumari, a third-year engineering student, received grievous injuries when her senior cut her throat with a knife as her parents watched in horror. The attacker later tried to commit suicide by cutting his wrist but was unarmed by a policeman.
The shocking incident occurred this morning in Vijayawada city of Krishna district, about 280 km from the state4 capital city of Hyderabad.
Meena Kumari, 28, who was bleeding profusely, was admitted to the Government General Hospital where her condition was stated to be critical. Sandeep was also admitted to the same hospital but doctors said he is out of danger.
Sandeep, a fourth-year student of a private engineering college in Guntur, told reporters that he resorted to the step as she had stopped talking to him for two months and was moving closer to another boy.
He claimed that they knew each other since July last year. The police said the young man had approached her parents with his wish to marry her and was advised to send his parents for talks. The girl had reportedly refused to marry him.
The police said they have booked Sandeep for attempt to murder and have taken him into custody after he was discharged from the hospital.
The incident sent shock waves among the student community in the city, which has been rocked by series of killings of girl students by spurned youth in recent years.
Ayesha Meeran, a 19-year-old first-year B. Pharmacy student, was raped and murdered on the night of Dec 27 last year in her room at a women’s hostel. A note allegedly left behind by the killer said he raped and killed her because she had spurned his love.
The police were yet to crack the case, which made headlines in the local media because the girl’s parents alleged that the police were deliberately going slow as relatives of a minister were involved.
In 2004, Vijayawada was rocked by the brutal murder of a girl student by her college mate in the college premises. Srilakshmi was killed by the man whose advances she had spurned as other students and college staff watched in horror. Manohar was later arrested in Tamil Nadu and the trial court sentenced him to death. However, the Andhra Pradesh High Court reduced the sentence to life imprisonment.
