“This coalition government is the result of the determination not only of all the political actors in Kenya but also of the international community which has remained united behind Mr Kofi Annan and his Panel of Eminent African Personalities,” said Solana in a statement.

The EU foreign policy chief noted that returning to normality is vital not only for the Kenyan people but also for the whole region – from Sudan to Somalia. Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki unveiled Sunday a grand coalition cabinet which has 40 ministers and 50 assistant ministers.

Kibaki named opposition leader Raila Odinga as the new prime minister after secret talks on Saturday. The disputed results of presidential elections in December sparked widespread violence in which 1,500 people were killed in Kenya.
