New Delhi : People in the Indian capital felt the sting of a hot summer day Tuesday with the maximum temperatures crossing 38 degrees Celsius mark.
The minimum in Delhi was at 24.6 degrees Celsius – five degrees above what is normal during this time of the year.
However, people can have some solace from the weatherman’s forecast as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) says rains are likely in the north Indian region in the next couple of days from Tuesday.
“A western disturbance is currently lying over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir. It is likely to cause fairly widespread rain/thundershowers over western Himalayan region till Tuesday,” an IMD bulletin said.
“Scattered rains are likely over the adjoining plains of northwest India and north Rajasthan during same period.”
“The maximum temperatures are likely to decrease by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius over plains of northwest India during next two days (from Tuesday),” the bulletin said.
The central India and parts of southern Rajasthan saw temperatures soaring above the 40-degree mark. Bhopal and Nagpur cities again recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius Tuesday.
In Bhubaneswar, which recorded above 40 degrees Monday, people had a relief as mercury plummeted to 34 degrees Celsius Tuesday.
However, at least five people were feared to have died in the heat wave in Orissa for the past four days with the maximum temperature crossing 40 degrees Celsius in some part of the state, an official said in Bhubaneswar.
Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital received heavy rainfall since Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the northeastern city of Guwahati had another wet day, with nearly 12 mm of rain recorded. The weather office has forecast more showers for the region.
