Manama : Kuwait’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain Sheikh Azzam Mubarak Al-Sabah has affirmed significance of the United States role in bolstering and maintaining security and stability of the Gulf region.
Sheikh Azzam, in a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), said the continous American support for Iraq’s security and stability would lead to further strengthening of the region’s calm and order.
The Kuwaiti ambassador, speaking at a meeting that grouped him with the Iraqi and American ambassadors to Bahrain, praised Washington’s efforts, aimed at creating stability in Iraq, and agreed with the American diplomat that regional stability could be achieved through support for democracy in shadow of international developments and changes.
They were also in harmony on the necessity of support from the internatioal community and the Arab League for the Iraqi Government in its reconstruction efforts and tackling security problems.
Sheikh Azzam confirmed that member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) abide by resolutions of the Security Council regarding Iraq and honor obligations of continuing support for the Iraqi Government with regard of the reconstruction, facing security problems and realizing national conciliation.
On Kuwaiti-US relations, the diplomat confirmed that these ties have noticeably improved since His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah assumed power as the Amir, praising these relations at the levels of military and security coordination.
These relations have been significantly promoted to the level of forming a strong alliance for sake of maintaining regional security and stability, the Kuwaiti ambassador added.
The US led an international alliance in the early 90s that resulted in ousting Iraqi occupation troops from Kuwait after a seven-month occupation of the Gulf state. Kuwait and Bahrain are members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) that also includes the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Washington strongly supports the GCC, founded in the early 80s in shadow of a regional war between Iran and Iraq.
