Direct poll counting over, CPN-M bags half

Kathmandu : Updated data from the website of Election Commission (EC) of Nepal Tuesday showed that the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (CPN-M) bagged half seats of the Constituent Assembly (CA) election through direct elections.

The counting for the votes under the First-Past-The-Post (FPTP)has been completed.

According to the final tally, the CPN-M has won 120 out of the total 240 seats under the FPTP, the direct poll.

The Nepali Congress (NC), the largest party in the Interim Parliament, is a distant second with 37 seats followed by the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML) with33 seats.

Two newly formed parties active in southern Nepal’s Terai region, Madhesi People’s Rights Forum (MPRF) and Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party (TMLP) won 30 and nine seats respectively.

The Rajendra Mahato-led Sadbhavana Party has pocketed four seats. The Nepal Workers and Peasants Party (NWPP), Peoples Front and independent candidates each won two seats. Rastriya Janamorcha won one seat.

Speaking at a press conference, EC Spokesperson Laxman Bhattarai said the result under the proportional representation (PR) electoral system would probably come by Tuesday.

“Thereafter, the EC would take two to three days to calculate the votes received by each political party and allocate 335 seats for all eligible political parties on the basis of their vote weight and inform them in this regard,” he said.

According to the agreement reached among Nepali political parties, 240 CA members will be elected through FPTP and 335 CA members from the PR electoral system while another 26 CA members would be nominated in the 601-member Constituent Assembly.

The Constituent Assembly to be formed after the elections started on April 10, is to decide the future political setup and the fate of the monarchy of Nepal.
