Storms batter large areas of France as partial alert is maintained

Paris : Storms with winds of up to 130 kilometres per hour battered France overnight in a corridor from the north to the south of the country and emergency services reported at least one death and severe damage in a number of areas.

Weather services, which had put 27 of France’s 90 metropolitan departments on alert Wednesday, maintained the alert in seven departments in central France on Thursday, the services announced.

One 12-year-old girl died near Bourges in the centre of the country Wednesday night after a tree fell on her tent in a summer camp. Another girl was seriously injured and there was widespread flooding and reports of trees down across a broad band of territory from the Belgian border to the south of France.

Heavy rains, lightening, and thunder storms continued into the early hours in many areas, including in the capital, Paris.
