“There was a fire in my belly which was the driving force for me. I knew I had to do something after Akhil and Jitender lost their bouts. I had to win my bout and I am really happy for what I have done. But I can’t stop here. My target is to win the gold medal,” Vijender told reporters after defeating Ecuador’s Carlos Gongora 9-4 in the middleweight (75kg) category quarterfinals at the Workers’ Gymansium.

Of the bout Vijender said: “It was a tough fight but I cleverly used my height. I tried hitting his body and from there I gained some points.”

In Friday’s semi-final, Vijender will face Cuban Emilio Correa Bayeaux. But even if he loses, Vijender will get the bronze.

“I will settle for nothing less than a gold. I have worked hard for all these years to come here. During our camp at Patiala, we used to watch the footage of all the boxers and that has helped me a lot,” he said.
