Matiwullah Khan, the provincial police chief, told Xinhua that it occurred at around 1 p.m. (0830 GMT) when the civilian mini bus running on the Kandahar-Uruzgan highway north of Kandahar city hit roadside mine, killing 10 passengers and wounding four others on board.

“There were two children and one woman among the death,” the police official said, “the enemies of peace, a phrase usually hinted Taliban militants, were behind the bloodshed.”

Taliban insurgents fighting the government and international troops have yet to make any comment.

Taliban insurgents who staged a violent comeback three years ago have intensified their activities across Afghanistan over the past weeks to mount pressure on the government despite around 70,000 foreign troops stationed in the war-torn country vowing to keep peace and help reconstruction here.

Conflicts and spiraling insurgency have claimed the lives of over 3,000 people so far this year.
