Kabul : Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai removed two top army commanders after a coalition air strike in Herat killed 90 civilians.
General Jalandar Shah Behnam, head of the corps for western Afghanistan, and commando Major Abdul Jabar were fired for negligence and concealing facts, an official statement said.
The air strike was launched Friday by the US-led coalition against the Azizabad village in Shindand district, where 90 Afghan civilians were killed.
According to the Afghan Islamic Press agency, Karzai also criticized coalition forces for no coordinationg operations with Afghan military.
The Interior Ministry said 19 women and 50 children, under 15 years old were killed in the strike, which destroyed over 15 houses.
The coalition has insisted only 30 militants were killed.
