Jerusalem : An Israeli army court on Tuesday sentenced a former Palestinian mayor to six years in prison for his support for Hamas, local daily Ha’aretz reported.
Hatam Ridah Grar, former mayor of the northern West Bank city of Jenin, was convicted of using his authority to provide assistance to the Palestinian militant group, which Israel blacklists as an terrorist organization, said the report.
The Israel Defense Forces court thus sentenced the defendant to six years in prison and three years probation, according to the report.
In a separate development on Sunday, Israeli security forces raided the offices of an Israeli group Islamic Movement in the northern Israeli town of Umm al-Fahm, over allegations that the “illegal” organization had been aiding Hamas.
Early in July, Israeli army conducted a campaign in the West Bank to crack down on the civil associations and charities which were allegedly linked with Hamas.
