Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Kayani made the remarks at the 113th Corps Commanders’ Conference held at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, some 30 km south of Islamabad, according to an official statement.

Kayani said the Pakistani Army stood for peace and security and hoped that it would be maintained in the region.

The commanders’ meeting was the first since last week’s terror attacks in India’s financial capital Mumbai in which at least 172 people, including foreign nationals, were killed and 248 others wounded.

Earlier on Thursday, Kayani met US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who flew into Islamabad from New Delhi to discuss the situation after the terror attacks in Mumbai.
