Colombo : A bomb explosion on a bus in the convulsive northeast of Sri Lanka killed at least 10 people Monday and left an incalculable number of wounded during celebrations for the 60th anniversary of independence from British rule.
The attack occurred in Weli Oya, where fierce fights between government troops and Tamil separatists are taking place, and celebrations are being held amid strong security measures.
Earlier, a mine explosion at the side of a highway killed a soldier and wounded three others, and the government holds the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam responsible.
The main opposition parties are boycotting the independence activities organized by the government of President Mahinda Rajapakse, and the capital experienced two other dynamite explosions today, but with no victims.
