Maulana Rahmani has issued to the press a copy of a letter addressed to the prime minister that says the prime minister has lucidly represented Indian civilization on the occasion of his meeting with French president Nicholas Sarkozi during his recent India visit. It says that French presidents’ announcement that ban on turbans will be revoked is an effective step for sustenance of Indian culture and religious identity of Sikh community in France.

Maulana Rahmani appreciated Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh that he considered religious representation of Sikh community as a member of the community to be his official duty. Prime minister’s this very practice is an example that should be followed by the leaders of other minorities, said Maualana.

Referring to religious and cultural freedom enshrined in the Constitution in his letter, Maulana Rahmani drew prime minister’s attention towards wishful interpretation of the law of Shariah by certain courts and said the courts should not go to this extent. He requested the prime minister to exert his influence to stop the dilution of religious identity of Muslims and their personal law.
