Berlin : The recent Munich security conference showed increasing difference between Europe and the United States on issues like Afghanistan, the capital press states Monday.
In the foreign and defense ministers’ conference of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and Asia in Berlin, Washington only analyzed military topics, “Handelsblatt” newspaper reports.
German politicians sought to formulate a more extensive security concept, the daily notes.
The financial publication states about this issue that “when we talk of security policy in United States, we only tackle the question on how and when the country sends more troops to war zones like the occupied Iraq or Afghanistan.”
But Germans and most of the 26 NATO members say it is important to analyze how to end the operation on Afghan soil and evacuate troops.
German Defense Minister Franz Josef Jung told the daily that security is not only a military affair, but also confidence and disarmament.
Berlin rejects Washington’s demands to move troops to south Afghanistan, where the armed opposition to the foreign occupation is strong.
According to the daily, the abyss of positions between members of the alliance is increasing, especially after the worsening of the situation in Afghanistan, invaded by the United States in October 2001.
