Amman : The Brazilian Foreign Affairs Minister Celso Amorim held talks with King Abdullah II of Jordan on bilateral relations and the Middle East conflict.
Amorim who transmitted an invitation to the monarch from President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to visit Brazil, arrived Tuesday in Amman as part of a tour of the Middle East that includes visits to Saudi Arabia, Syria, Palestine territories and Israel.
“Talks dealt with issues of cooperation between Jordan and Brazil on economic and cultural levels and opportunities to benefit from the experience of Brazilian companies in the exploitation Jordanian bituminous schist,” the royal house informed.
Bituminous schist is a fossil fuel that generates petroleum and gas when decomposed.
The tour by Amorim to the region confirms the will of that South American giant to also work for peace in the Levant and work with the Arab part in economic cooperation.
The Brazilian chancellor met yesterday with President Bashar al Assad of Syria, a country that he considered should not be left out in the peace process of the Middle East.
Amorim is calling for dialogues with all those involved in the process. “I am convinced that Syria has a very important role to play, a very stabilizing role,” he pointed out.
According to press sources in Damascus, in his defense of talks in the region, the Brazilian chancellor also criticized the exclusion of the Islamic Resistance movement (Hamas) in Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.
