Suicidal Attack Kills 80 in Afghanistan

Kabul : A suicidal attack on Sunday during a dogfight in the Afghan southern province of Kandahar killed 80 people and wounded 70.

Rebel leaders were participating in the event as part of the audience, noted the governor of that locality Asadullah Khalid.

Khalid said that dogfights are very frequent in Afghanistan and are considered the people’s entertainment since it attracts hundreds of them, this type of competition usually takes place outdoors, he added.

The suicidal attacker exploded the explosive devise during the competition, commented Khalid.

Witnesses reported the militia commanders’ bodyguards opened fire after the explosion so is possible that several people died with the shots.

It is the bloodiest attack since the occupying troops invaded that Central Asian country in October 2001.

The authorities reported that the attack was seemed to be targeted to Abdul Hakim Jan, a rebel commander who died in the incident, until now any other armed group has taken responsibility for the event.

Kandahar, Taliban’s ancient bastion, is Afghanistan’s second biggest city and one of the main opium-producing regions.
