Arab plan for Lebanon clear, no obstacles to future national unity govt – Moussa

Beirut : Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa has said that the Arab peace initiative for Lebanon said nothing about monopoly or any attempt to block a national unity government to be formed in the future.

Moussa made the statement after sponsoring a meeting among Future Movement chief Saad al-Hariri, Kataeb Party leader Amin Gemayel and Free Patriotic Movement MP Michel Aoun at the Lebanese parliament.

“According to the Arab initiative, the majority bloc in parliament is not entitled to half the seats plus one in the cabinet to be formed nor the opposition bloc is entitled to a third of the seats” thus giving it the ability to veto major decisions, Moussa said.

He said there was still ample room for optimism because the initiative was “clear and straightforward.” He added that a similar meeting as that just held in parliament would again be held in the same place on his return from a visit to Damascus Friday.

He said that if the opposition and loyalist camps reached an agreement on the formation of the next cabinet, the agreement “will be final.”

Turning to another issue, that of putting the Lebanese issue for solution by the international community, Moussa said he was “favourable to an Arab solution to the Lebanese crisis.”
