Delivering a speech on the occasion, the leader of the Iranian delegation Hossein Panahi Azar, said, the Islamic Republic of Iran is of the view that the international law plays a major and indispensable role in preserving and promoting the peace and security, ensuring the economic and social developments and improving the human rights situation in the world.

“The main aim of the international law is to establish an equitable and just world order, an order that is meant to serve the interests of all the people of the world without discrimination, on the basis of sovereign equality among all the States and respect for their independence and territorial integrity. In this context, UN member states should renew their commitment to defend, preserve and promote the UN Charter and implementation of international law, with the aim of making further progress to achieving full respect for international law,” he added.

Referring to the peaceful nuclear program of Iran, Panahi Azar said: “The Islamic Republic of Iran has planned and started activities in the field of peaceful use of the nuclear energy since 1957. In this context, the Islamic Republic of Iran has constantly complied with its obligations under NPT and Statute of the International Atomic Energy Agency and has never had any prohibited activities, hence, its inalienable rights under the NPT should not be violated by any means.” “Involvement of the Security Council in the Iran’s peaceful nuclear program is in full contravention with the organizational, Statutory nd safeguards requirements governing the IAEA practices and procedures. Furthermore, the substantive and procedural legal requirements, that are necessary for engaging the Security Council in the issues raised by the Agency, have been totally ignored in this regard,” Panahi Azar added.

On the terrorist activities all over the world, he said: “My delegation believes that terrorist act constitute the most flagrant violations of international law, including the international humanitarian and human rights law, in particular the right to life, leading to the lack of the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedom of peoples, and that such acts endanger the territorial integrity and stability of States, as well as create adverse consequences on the economic and social development and cause the destruction of the physical and economic infrastructure of States.”

“Condemning the terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, the Islamic Republic of Iran, as a victim of this menace for decades, has put the fighting against terrorism at the top of its priorities”, he added.
