Moderate earthquake rocks Sumatra, Indonesia

Jakarta : An earthquake with magnitude of 5.6 struck Sumatra Island in western parts of Indonesia on Monday, with no report of damage or casualties, Indonesia’s meteorology agency said here.

The quake jolted at 14:10 Jakarta time (0710 GMT) with epicenter at 76 km southwest of Pariaman in West Sumatra province and at 23 km under sea bed, an official of the agency Tri Handayani told Xinhua.

The intensity of the quake was felt at 1 to 2 MMI (modified mercalli intensity) at the town and Padang Pandjand town of the province, she said.

Indonesia sits at a vulnerable zone called “the Pacific Ring of Fire” where two continental plates meet, causing frequent volcanic movements.
