Patyala, India : As many as 14 universities comparable to major institutions across the globe will be set in the country through a Central act, a top UGC official has said.
They will be located in Pune, Kolkata, Coimbatore, Mysore, Visakhapatnam, Gandhinagar, Jaipur, Patna, Bhopal, Kochi, Amritsar, Bhubaneswar, Greater Noida and Guwahati, University Grants Commission (UGC) Vice Chairman Mool Chand Sharma said.
Maintaining these institutions would be of global standards, he told reporters yesterday adding that the varsities would be established under an act.
Their locations have been decided keeping in mind the connectivity and the infrastructure which such universities would need, Sharma said, adding the contour and shape of these varsities would be defined under the act.
He said UGC will also help establish 370 colleges in districts where access and participation rates are lower than the national average.
Most of these districts also have a concentration of SCs, STs and minorities, he said.
On fixing salaries of university employees, he said a decision will be taken after the Prof G K Chadha Committee for pay review submits its report.
