Madrid : Javier Irureta stunned Spanish football Monday evening by resigning as coach of crisis club Zaragoza. Irureta gave no immediate reason.
He is the third coach to quit at Zaragoza this season, creating something of a record for a Liga club.
The veteran Basque coach – who took Deportivo Coruna to the league title in 2000 – has been in charge at Zaragoza for just six games, only one of which was a win.
His troubled team crashed 2-1 away to bottom team Levante Sunday, a result that leaves them joint third from bottom with just 29 points from 26 games.
Irureta’s replacement will be Manolo Villanova, until now coach of third division side Huesca.
Zaragoza started the season with Victor Fernandez on the bench, and with high hopes following a high-spending summer.
Fernandez was sacked in January and replaced by Ander Garitano, who lasted only two games.
Another Liga club looking for a new coach right now are Murcia.
Murcia president Jesus Samper is all set to sack coach Lucas Alcaraz, after Sunday’s 4-0 thrashing away to Betis.
Murcia are second from bottom now, with just 23 points.
