“A proposal to treat the backlog of reserved vacancies of the OBCs as a separate and distinct group, which would not be subject to the limit of 50 percent on reservation in a year, is under consideration,” said Union Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Suresh Pachouri.

The minister did not give further details. Milind Deora put up the question in the Lok Sabha based on a report published in a leading English daily Feb 13, 2008.

Under a Supreme Court order, the quota of reserved seats cannot exceed 50 percent of the total. However, the OBC vacancies have not been filled over the years and are to be treated separately, according to the minister.
