New Delhi : The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has appointed the Danish Road Directorate (DRD) to define road safety policy and develop action plans, said K.H. Muniyappa, Minister of State for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, here Thursday.
DRD, an arm of the Danish Ministry of Transport, in a joint venture with city-based Span Consultants Pvt Ltd would define road safety policy and develop action plans under the provisions of World Bank, the minister told the Rajya Sabha.
He said road safety audits for certain stretches like western transport corridor were carried out through international consultants with the help of Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The road safety plans under the World Bank loan for Chennai-Kolkatta, Delhi-Kolkatta, Delhi-Mumbai and Mumbai-Chennai section of Golden Quadrilateral are in progress, said Muniyappa.
The total cost of consultancy service to define road safety policy and develop action plan is respectively Rs.8.58 million ($214,400) and Rs.8.25 million. The road safety audit was carried in four packages and the total cost of the consultancy was $1.62 million, he informed the house.
These consultants were required to introduce international practices on road safety audit and public education on road safety in India.
