The British newspapers Wednesday were full of speculation that Scolari, who was courted by England after Eriksson stepped down from the national job, could replace the Swede at Eastlands.

The BBC said last week that City owner Thaksin Shinawatra had told Eriksson he was the not the right man for the job and that he would be sacked at the end of the season.

On Wednesday, the BBC said City have made contact with Scolari’s representatives. Scolari, 59, is still contracted to lead Portugal at Euro 2008.
