Riyadh, Saudi Arabia : Supporting the recently formed Arab League committee for peace in Darfur would help the Qatari-chaired group to bring peace to the troubled Sudanese region, said GCC Secretary General Abdulrahman Al-Attiyah Wednesday.
The statement came to commend the formation of the committee headed by Qatar Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jaber Al-Thani. The committee will prepare itself for a meeting to be held in Doha, Qatar, soon.
Attiyah affirmed that Qatar played an important role when it dealt with the Lebanese file, hoping that similar results could be achieved with the Sudanese issue.
The GCC official said that the decision was a great indication that diplomacy could still end tension in the western Sudanese region, stressing that the GCC would play a vital role in the Arab League committee.
