Met official’s wife killed in Delhi accident

New Delhi: The wife of an official working with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) was killed when their scooter was hit by a speeding truck, police said Monday.

Nirmala Gupta, 32, was riding pillion with her husband Dinesh Chand Gupta on a scooter. The couple was returning to their Andrews Ganj house after shopping when a truck bearing Haryana registration number hit them from behind around 11.30 p.m. Sunday.

“The truck hit the scooter when Dinesh Chand Gupta was trying to overtake,” a police officer said.

After the accident, the truck’s driver Ashok Kumar tried to escape but was nabbed by the people around. He was then handed over to the police.

The police said a case of rash and negligent driving and causing death due to negligence has been registered at the Sarojini Nagar police station and Kumar has been arrested.
