New Delhi : Condemning the attack on a Kerala legislator’s daughter in Mangalore, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Saturday said the central government should ensure that women and minorities are protected in Karnataka. “The CPI-M strongly condemns the violence against the school going daughter of a Kerala legislator in Mangalore. The central government is duty bound to ensure that women and minorities are protected in Karnataka,” the party politburo said in a statement.
Suspected Sri Ram Sene activists Friday targeted the CPI-M legislator’s daughter Shruti and her classmate’s brother while they were on a bus in Mangalore in Karnataka.
“The violence included forcible abduction from a public bus, confinement, physical beating, humiliation, threats. Along with her a young Muslim man who was travelling on the same bus and who was a brother of a classmate was targeted,” the CPI-M said.
“It is the fascist agenda of the Sangh Parivar and the Hindutva brigade targeting minorities and women rights in the name of culture which has spawned such criminal elements.”
“The Karnataka government must be forced to act,” it said.
Last month, some young women were beaten up in a Mangalore pub by the self-styled pro-Hindu moral brigade Sri Ram Sene.
“It (Karanataka) has not only refused to book such elements and proscribe their organisation under the Unlawful Prevention of Activities Act in spite of repeated attacks, but has provided justification for their criminal acts as in the case of the assault on young women in a Mangalore pub,” the statement by CPI-M said.
