Kolkata : Emami Biotech Ltd, a part of the Rs.20-billion (Rs.2,000-crore) Emami Group, will supply 250 kilolitres of bio-diesel per month to Calcutta Tramways Co. (CTC), a top official said here Tuesday.
Both companies have signed a deal in this regard.
“To begin with we will supply only 25 percent of the total diesel requirement of CTC per month,” Emami Group director Aditya V. Agarwal told reporters.
CTC requires 450 tonnes of diesel per month.
At present, the company has the capacity to produce 300 tonnes of bio-diesel per day at its Haldia plant, which was set up at an investment of Rs.2.5 billion. “But we will not do full-scale production now as we don’t have enough buyers now. We will only do production for five-six days a month,” Agarwal said.
He rued the fact that though the facility was ready three months ago, the company did not get any prospective buyer for bio-diesel.
Added another Emami Group director Manish Goenka: “Since CTC has started purchasing bio-diesel from us after a trial run, we feel that the other government organisations should now feel confident in using our product.”
Apart from the government department, the company is also in talks with various mining companies, defence departments, power houses, which can use bio-diesel as an alternative fuel, Agarwal said without specifying any company name.
Emami is also in talks with oil companies like Indian Oil Corp, Bharat Petroleum Corp and Hindustan Petroleum for selling mix of diesel and bio-diesel through their dispensing stations, he said.
The company is also looking at setting up its own dispensing stations at Haldia and Balasore, Orissa, for which it expects to soon get nods from the state government.
There is no need to change engines of the vehicles to run it in bio-diesel mix, Agarwal said.
