Kolkata : A man committed suicide by jumping in front of a speeding truck after chopping off his younger brother’s head in a West Bengal town Thursday, the police said.
The incident took place at Kanchrapara town under Bijpur police station in North 24 Parganas district on the fringes of Kolkata.
“Amar Mondal chopped off his younger brother Swapan’s head with an axe Thursday after they had an altercation over cutting a tree at their courtyard,” a senior police official of Bijpur police station told reporters.
“Immediately after committing the crime, Mondal ran to the main road and before anyone could stop him, jumped in front of a speeding truck. He died at the hospital Thursday noon,” the officer said.
According to police sources, the two brothers were having a dispute over a tree in their courtyard for over a month. Swapan wanted to chop it down, while Amar was against it.
“On Thursday, Swapan forcibly started cutting the tree and that led to a heated altercation between the duo. In the spur of the moment, Amar chopped off his head with the axe with which he was cutting the tree,” the police sources said.
