Patna : At least 24 people were injured as the police used force to disperse crowds of fans rushing to the ground for a closer look of their cricket idols after a friendly Twenty20 match.
“About two dozens of fans were injured as crowds rushed to the ground during the prize distribution ceremony and the police were forced to use force to control them,” Senior Superintendent of Police (Patna) Amit Kumar told IANS.
The Twenty20 match was held to collect funds for the relief for victims of the Kosi river flood of last year. Several top players, including Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Vinod Kambli, Piyush Chawla and Praveen Kumar, were part of the two teams.
Patna has not hosted a cricket match featuring international icons for a long time. During the prize distribution ceremony, some fans jumped the barriers and rushed into the ground. Many more took cue, leading to a free-for-all.
The police had to provide escort to the criketers and lead them away, Kumar said.
The injured spectators were given the first-aid treatment.
