The scientist, L. Mahalingam, 47, left home around 6 a.m. Monday for his walk in Kaiga township, about 500 km from here, but did not return home.

“Search is on to trace the missing scientist. We are doing our best to know his whereabouts,” Mallapur police inspector Krishna Gokar told IANS on phone.

Mahalingam’s wife Vinayakar Sundari filed a missing complaint at the Mallapur police station late Monday after waiting day long for his return.

With the help of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the police and the atomic power plant officials have searched a lake within the township, surrounding jungles and nearby places such as Kadra and Karwar on the west coast to locate the scientist, but to no avail.

Kaiga spokesperson Jugal Kishore said Mahalingam has been working at the power plant since 10 years and lives in the township quarters.

“He left home around 6 a.m. on his regular walk but did not return. He is an engineer in BE (mechanical). We are doing our best to trace him and help the family to cope with the sad development,” Kishore told IANS.

The scientist has a teenage daughter studying in Class 12 at the central school in Kaiga township.
