As the proceedings of the house began Monday afternoon, the BJP members demanded suspension of the question hour to talke up a discussion on water and power problems faced by the national capital’s residents.

However, Speaker Yoganand Shastri did not accept their demand. On this, some of the BJP legislators left their seats and came towards his chair. The speaker repeatedly asked them to return to their seats but when they refused, he suspended eight of the BJP legislators from the assembly for a day.

The remaining BJP members staged a walkout and decided not to attend the assembly proceedings Monday. They even staged a protest outside the assembly, shouting slogans like “Pani do, varna gaddi chhod do (Give water, otherwise leave your seat)” and “Sheila Dikshit satta ke nashe mein choor, janata dooshit paani peene ko majboor (Sheila Dikshit is drunk on power, the people doomed to drink contaminated water”.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had called an all-party meeting Monday to discuss the water problem. However, the opposition alleged that they had not received any official call or invitation to attend the meeting.
