New Delhi: The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Thursday asked the government to take action against security personnel known to have abused human rights in Jammu and Kashmir.
Saying “some tangible confidence building measures” should follow the visit of an all-party delegation to the state, CPI-M mouthpiece People’s Democracy said: “At the least, the central government must initiate action against those members of the security forces against whom charges of excesses have been proved by (security) agencies.
“Further, a review of all political prisoners languishing in jail must be undertaken and those without substantive charges against them could be released,” it said.
The all-party delegation visited Jammu and Kashmir Sep 20-21 following more than 100 days of disturbances during which 103 civilians were killed, mainly in firing by the security forces on stone-pelting mobs.
People’s Democracy said by meeting a large cross-section of people and political parties in both Srinagar and Jammu, the all-party team conveyed its solidarity with the people and shared their agony.
It said the representations made before the delegation in Jammu revealed the widespread feeling of a ‘Kashmir-centric approach’ of the central government at the expense of neglecting the Jammu and Ladakh regions.
“All the promises and packages announced by the central and state governments (for Kashmiri Pandits) have remained largely unfulfilled. The sufferings of the Kashmiri Pandits and other displaced people need to be urgently addressed.”
It said the interactions with people in Srinagar and the visit to the hospitals revealed “the deep degree of alienation of people in the Valley”.
