Cairo : Toppled Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak and his sons will be questioned over the use of violence against anti-government protesters and corruption during his tenure, media reports said.
Egypt’s general prosecutor decided Sunday to question Mubarak and his two sons over accusations about the use of violence against protesters during the anti-government demonstrations in January-February, Xinhua reported, citing Egypt’s official MENA news agency.
Mubarak and his two sons will also be questioned over alleged corruption by using their influence to seize public funds and get commissions from different deals, it said.
The former president defended himself and his family and denied the accusations in a recorded audio speech aired by Dubai-based Al-Arabiya TV Sunday.
“I strongly pained regarding unfair campaigns and baseless accusations targeting my reputation and history,” he said.
Mubarak stepped down on Feb 11 after 18 days of protests against his 29-year rule. He handed over the power to the military and has been living in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh since then under military guard.
Youth groups and activists in Egypt have been calling for the trial of Mubarak and his aides. They organised a mass protest Friday in central Cairo’s Tahrir Square, the epicentre of the previous protests, to press on the military to try the former president immediately.
Meanwhile, former prime minister Ahmed Nazif was detained on Sunday over corruption charges, local media reported.
