Berlin : A NATO spokeswoman Thursday confirmed that the western military alliance had launched air raids near the Libyan capital of Tripoli.
‘We can confirm that NATO aircraft struck an SA-2 anti-aircraft battery 40 kilometers south of Tripoli this afternoon,’ spokeswoman Oana Lungescu told media representatives on the sidelines of a NATO meeting in Berlin.
Lungescu denied earlier reports that NATO combat jets had targeted central Tripoli.
NATO has been stepping up its airstrikes in a move aimed at supporting Libyan rebels trying to oust Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi who has ruled his country with an iron fist for over four decades.
The western military pact is involved in an ongoing major dispute over the future Libya strategy.
