New Delhi : Appalled by the death of a sewer worker who was not using safety equipment in north Delhi, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notice to the Delhi Jal Board and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
The commission took suo motu cognisance of a media report alleging that two workers Rampal, 45, and Dharamvir, 40, were left unconscious when they tried to clean a sewer without safety equipment in Rohini Aug 8.
The two were taken to a nearby hospital by their fellow workers where doctors declared Rampal dead. The condition of Dharamvir was stated to be stable, the report said.
“The contents of the report, if true, raise a serious issue of human rights violation of the deceased because of non-observance of the safety guidelines framed by the commission and circulated long back,” the NHRC said in a statement Thursday.
The commission called for reports from the civic agencies within four weeks and directed them to inform whether any action had been taken against officials responsible for the incident.
It also sought to know if any compensation was proposed to be given to the family of the worker who was killed.
