The Trinamool Congress also left two seats for their alliance partner Socialist Unity Centre of India-Communist (SUCI-C).

“The door of alliance with the Congress is not closed yet. On the basis of the discussion we had last night (Thursday) with the Congress, I have left 64 seats for them. If the Congress accepts it, I will be happy,” Banerjee, the union railway minister, told a press conference here.

Talks between senior Congress leader and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Banerjee were inconclusive as both could not reach an agreement on seat-sharing for the April 18-May 10 assembly elections in the state.

Earlier, in 2009 the Trinamool and the Congress, along with the SUCI, had joined hands before the Lok Sabha polls and decimated the Left Front that has been ruling the state since 1977.

The alliance had bagged 26 of the state’s 42 Lok Sabha seats.

Both Congress and Trinamool Congress decided to break the political alliance for May 30 civic polls last year after both failed to clinch a seat-sharing deal.
