Poll panel to review preparations in West Bengal

Kolkata: Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi, along with senior poll panel officials, will arrive here Tuesday for talks with West Bengal officials and representatives of political parties on the preparedness for the April-May assembly polls.

According to state Chief Electoral Officer Sunil Gupta, the full team of the Election Commission will arrive Tuesday afternoon and return to Delhi Wednesday evening.

“EC chief Quraishi, commissioners V.S. Sampat and H.S. Brahma, deputy election commissioner and in-charge of West Bengal Vinod Kumar Zutshi and director general for expenditure monitoring P.K. Dash will hold one-to-one meetings with the representatives of nine political parties from 4 p.m. to 6.15 p.m. Tuesday,” Gupta said Monday.

On Wednesday, they will hold talks between 9.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. with the district election officers, police superintendents, divisional commissioners, deputy inspector generals and inspector generals of police on election preparedness, he said.

Gupta also said the poll panel will hold discussions with the state Chief Secretary Samar Ghosh, Home Secretary G.D. Goutama, Director General of Police Naparajita Mukherjee and newly-appointed Kolkata Commissioner of Police R.K. Pachnanda in the afternoon, which will be followed by a press conference.

According to Gupta, the voter slip distributed by the EC can be used as an alternative document provided the slip is authenticated by block level officers or other senior election officers.

The six-phase assembly polls will be held in West Bengal April 18 to May 10. The results will be declared May 13.
