Chouhan wants panel to assess pollution around Union Carbide

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh through a letter to constitute a special committee for assessing the quantum of soil and water pollution around Union Carbide India Limited premises.

In his letter, Chouhan said that a Group of Ministers (GoM) headed by the union home minister for disposal of issues pertaining to Bhopal gas tragedy has been reconstituted.

At the meetings of the Group of Ministers, a plea was made that an assessment should be made about the quantum of soil and water pollution on the premises of Union Carbide and adjoining areas.

Chouhan has appealed to the prime minister to constitute a special committee under the supervision of a competent agency of the union government. Experts in the environment sector of Madhya Pradesh should also be included in the committee, he said.
