New Delhi : Calling the gruesome Dec 16 gang-rape in the national capital a “shameless act”, union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde Saturday said much more still remained to be done to provide safety to women.
“We need combined efforts to ensure that women are secure,” Shinde said on the occasion of the 66th Raising Day of Delhi Police at Kingsway Camp in north Delhi.
He also had a word of appreciation for Delhi Police, who cracked the gang-rape case in just 24 hours.
“I congratulate the force for working out the case so soon,” he said.
Shinde said the government is taking several steps in ensuring security of women.
Announcing induction of 370 more police control room (PCR) vehicles, he said the government has given the nod for more female cops in the force.
Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar thanked the central government for supporting the 83,000 strong force when it faced public ire after the gang-rape.
“Media was critical but you were with us supporting and boosted our morale in that tough situation,” he said.
Kumar said the force is working rigorously to ensure safety of women in the city.
“We have increased the police patrolling on road, started 24 hours women help desk in every police stations and also formed anti-obscene and anti-stalking cell,” he added.
On Dec 16, a 23-year-old physiotherapy intern was brutally assaulted and gang-raped by six males in a moving bus. She succumbed to her grievous injuries Dec 29.
