The government clarification came in the wake of media reports alleging Rs.20 crore earmarked for building night shelters and to provide other welfare assistance to poor and homeless was siphoned off.

Besides, the statement said 10 officers of the Delhi Urban Slum Improvement board were suspended by the government in 2010, when the government took over the department from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

“The government has further stated that the embezzlement took place when the Slum & JJ Department was functioning under MCD. It reflects negligence on the part of the then MCD and its senior executive officers,” said a statement from the government.
