Kerala CPI-M alleges collusion in Italian marines’ case

By IANS,

Thiruvananthapuram : The Left Front in Kerala Tuesday accused the Congress-led state and central governments of “colluding” with Italy over the issue of its two marines accused of killing two fishermen. Italy has now refused to hand them over to India.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has termed as unacceptable Italy’s decision not to send the two marines back to India.

The Supreme Court in February allowed Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, accused of killing two Indian fishermen near Kerala coast, to return to Italy to vote in the Feb 24-25 national elections.

“This has taken place because all the players in this, the governments in Kerala, India and Italy have all colluded for this to take place. But the CPI-M is not going to sit idle. We will expose this unholy nexus and bring it in front of the people through strong protest measures,” former Kerala home minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan told IANS.

For the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-led Left opposition this is going to be the biggest stick to hit Chandy when the state assembly resumes its budget session from Friday.

The Left opposition may harp on the (UPA chairperson) Sonia Gandhi-Italian connection to corner the Congress-led state and central governments over the issue, sources said.
