Jordan will also issue residency permits to Iraqis who meet the requirements for the status, said Interior Ministry spokesperson Ziad Zu’bi.

But the government at the same time welcomes Iraq’s efforts to attract Iraqis back, he added.

The comment was made as a response to remarks of Iraq’s Ambassador to Jordan Saad Hayyani, who said the Iraqi government is keen to encourage Iraqi refugees in Jordan to return home due to improved security conditions in his country.

Security in Iraq has improved remarkably in all areas particularly in Baghdad, and the Iraqi government will facilitate the return of its displaced citizens, Hayyani said.

Zu’bi said Amman supports these efforts and the voluntary return, and meanwhile keep offering the Iraqi community the usual services.

Currently there are about 500,000 Iraqis living in Jordan, where they are offered education, health and other humanitarian services.
