States’ cooperation must for anti-terror agency: NGO

New Delhi : The newly constituted National Investigation Agency (NIA) can work only if it has the cooperation of the states, the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI), an international NGO, has told all chief ministers and urged them to join hands in fighting terror.

Along with its letters to the chief ministers, the CHRI enclosed documents like ‘Commentary on the NIA’, ‘Seven steps to police reforms’ and a memo on ‘The relationship between the executive and the police’ along with a statement of eminent citizens.

“The NIA is to make Indians more secure by addressing the gaps in our current approach to preventing and investigating offences with a transnational character,” it said in a statement here Tuesday.

“The NIA can only work if it has the cooperation of state governments, irrespective of their political affiliation, and has the long-term confidence of ordinary people,” it added.
